It seems some genius thinks that giving monetary incentives will help people to lose weight.
A journal by American Medical Association published a study where 57 volunteers were signed up to two financial incentive plans.
Their target is losing 16 pounds over a timespan of 16 weeks.
The first controlled group (I call it A) is in a group where they’re receiving prize if they lose more than targeted weight.
The other controlled group (I call it B) is more of participants investing their own money, in which they will lose it if they fail to hit their targeted weight.
A group earned $272 and lost 13.1 pounds. Some 47.4% hit their 16 pounds losing of weight.
While B group earned $378 and lost 14 pounds. Some 52.6% hit their 16 pounds losing of weight.
The study says “In conclusion, incentive approaches based on behavioral economic concepts appear to be highly effective in inducing initial weight loss. However, this weight loss was not fully sustained and further work is needed to test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of these approaches in achieving sustained weight loss.”
Well in my opinion, these people are losing weight for all the wrong reason and it will fail and not sustainable over time.
