Smoking cigarettes is the coolest form of prolonged suicide available – and college kids still aren’t smart enough to realize they aren’t immune.
For me personally, in local institutions, those I’ve came across who smokes be it in my class or dorm is rather small. Most are guys, and never the ladies.
The fact that teen smoking rates are steadily increasing is disturbing. We are finding out that about 80% of adult smokers started smoking as teenagers.
Teens like to act as if they are someone special or dangerous. By smoking they can act on those feelings. Because it is so forbidden it becomes more alluring to teens.
The problem is that when they take that first puff, they can become addicted.
Many of them think they’re just experimenting — but the “experiment” often lasts for decades.
As the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids reports, almost 90 percent of adult smokers started before they were 18.
Parents are the single biggest influence in their children’s lives. Use your voice and let your kids know that smoking is bad news.
Your teens may seem to be tuning you out and accuse you of lecturing, but they are listening. Discuss the dangers of teen smoking with them early and often.
