Sugar as Antioxidant Source? |

The ‘Journal of the American Dietetic Association’ study this month did a comparison of the different kinds of sugar out there for their antioxidant content.
And to their surprise, a few of the sugar have found to contain “substantial differences” of antioxidant in them.
Below is a list of the sugars in terms of antioxidant activities.
The Findings
Minimal antioxidant activity
- Refined table sugar
- Corn syrup
- Agave nectar
Intermediate antioxidant activity
- Maple syrup
- Brown sugar
- Honey
Highest antioxidant capacity
- Dark and blackstrap molasses
Of course this doesn’t mean the researchers are encouraging us to consume much of these sugars for their antioxidant benefits.
Instead try getting sugar with higher antioxidant capacity but still consuming the safe average amount recommendation of sugar, which is at 130 grams a day.
But I truly recommend you stick to World Health Organization recommendation of 50 grams daily. 130 grams is just too much in my opinion.
This would increase your antioxidant intake, but still within the recommended safe level.
