High Fructose Corn Syrup

High Fructose Corn Syrup

When you buy your food items, look at the label, look out for the term “High Fructose Corn Syrup”.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is the cause, and closely linked to many ailments out there if taken over long period of time consistently in large amounts.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is typically used as a sugar substitute and is ubiquitous in processed foods and beverages, including soft drinks, yogurt, industrial bread, cookies, salad dressing, and tomato soup.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Controversy

In September 2008, the Corn Refiners Association launched a series of United States television advertisements that claim that HFCS “is made from corn”, “is natural” (changed from previously-stated “doesn’t have artificial ingredients”), “has the same calories as sugar or honey”, “is nutritionally the same as sugar”, and “is fine in moderation”, in an attempt to keep consumers from boycotting HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup).

The ads feature actors portraying roles in upbeat domestic situations with sugary foods, with one actor disparaging a food’s HFCS content but being unable to explain why, and another actor rebuking the comments with these claims.

Finally, the ads each plug the Corn Refiners Association website. As HFCS is a controversial topic, parodies and criticisms of the ads have appeared on YouTube.

Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no general definition of “natural”, they have opposed calling high-fructose corn syrup natural, stating: “The use of synthetic fixing agents in the enzyme preparation, which is then used to produce HFCS, would not be consistent with our (…) policy regarding the use of the term ‘natural’.”

Below video Dr. David Kessler and Eric Schlosser talk about high fructose corn syrup in our food. Katie Couric also gets their thoughts on an interesting commercial.
