This is just terrible when I read this. Health care economist predicts when layoffs are being made, consumers loses access to affordable health care. When that happens, one is deprived of health care which would lead to a surge in deaths. The University of North Texas Health Science Center shared their findings regarding correlation among mortality, unemployment and reduced spending on health care recently. The professor in-charge says socioeconomic status is the largest determinant of health and mortality and I quote, “It’s not an act of God, it’s an act of the unemployment rate.” The professor also added that people would first reduce their spending, doing things like forgoing doctor visits. About six to nine months later, they rush to the hospital when they’re too ill to avoid a doctor. By then it’s usually too late, he said. He also shockingly shared, “In the past, we saw people die within 10 years after their job loss, now we’re seeing them die as early as the same year.” And you know what, you’re right when there’s nothing we can do about it when one is laid-off. But that doesn’t mean one just gives up when you’re out of luck and jobless. Knowledge is power and empower yourself with means and method to find cheaper alternatives in health care and living. Yes these are hard-times, so people don’t just give up yet.
